If you lead a healthy lifestyle but still have pockets of stubborn fat that you need to get rid of, liposuction may be the solution for you. When it comes to fat removal, liposuction is the gold standard, because it can remove fat from virtually any part of the body. But how does liposuction work and what is recovery like.
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that removes localized fat deposits from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, back, buttocks, and arms, in order to define body contours.
How liposuction works
Tiny incisions are made in the treatment area through which a thin, hollow tube known as a cannula is inserted. The cannula is moved back and forth to break up the fat deposits. A suction device attached to the cannula is used to remove the fat that has been dislodged.
What is recovery from liposuction like?
After liposuction patients typically experience a bit of pain, but over-the-counter pain medication is usually sufficient to ease any discomfort. Patients may also notice some swelling, bruising, and soreness in the treatment areas. Bruising and soreness generally disappear within 2-4 weeks, but swelling may last up to 6 weeks.
In order to ensure optimal healing after liposuction, patients are advised to carefully follow the post-operative instructions of their plastic surgeon.
When can I go back to work after liposuction?
Patients that have a desk job are generally back to work about one week after surgery, even earlier in some cases. However, patients with physically demanding jobs usually need additional time-off.
